Barry Crouse Service Award
Barry Crouse was a long-term club member, flight instructor, faculty advisor and tireless volunteer. Whenever there was something to be done, Barry was there to do it, and he fostered a volunteer spirit in all who knew him. Barry passed away on March 16, 2003.
During his tenure at Georgia Tech, he served as the Dean of Academic Affairs at the Institute of Paper Sciences and Technology. Dr. Crouse was also active in Techmasters, a professional speaking group on campus. He joined IPST in 1990 where he served as dean and professor of Chemistry.
As an aviator, he was distinguished with the designation “Master Certified Flight Instructor,” one of only 300 in the country from among 250,000 pilots. There is also an approach fix named for him near the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Barry’s waypoint, “CROUS,” is the first waypoint off the west end of runway 26L, and was first published by the Federal Aviation Administration on March 20, 2005.
The Barry Crouse Service Award was adopted by the YJFC in 2004 as a way to remember Barry and honor club members that, like Barry, have gone above and beyond the call of duty in providing service to the club. The award recipient is recognized at the YJFC spring banquet, and is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a YJFC member.

Peter Van Norde Flight Training Program
Peter Van Norde was a Tech Graduate in Aerospace Engineering (AE ’43). In 1999, he and his family generously donated a Cessna 310 to the club. The logistics of having a twin engine aircraft in the club did not work out, so with the Van Norde family’s blessing, the aircraft was sold and the proceeds placed into an endowment fund.
This fund allows the YJFC to give $1,000 each year to a deserving Georgia Tech student for use toward a private pilot license. The amount is credited to the recipient’s YJFC account for post-solo time placed on club aircraft. The award may only be used for primary training up until the time the recipient attains their private pilot’s certificate.
